Al Capone (#85 AZ)
Alphonse Gabriel Capone was born on January 17, 1899, in Brooklyn, New York. He
grew up in a rough neighborhood and was a member of two gangs before
he was fourteen. He received his infamous facial scars and the resulting
nickname "Scarface" when he insulted a patron at an Inn
where he was working and was attacked by her brother.
By the time he was 23, he was heavily involved in the bootlegging
business, had been arrested for disorderly conduct and committed
two murders.
Unlike so many prisoners at Alcatraz, Capone's crimes were not
petty or driven by desperation. He personified the gangster movement
that filled the country with fear. Crimes he had a hand in showed
no trace of him and were performed quickly.
Capone's most notorious killing was the St. Valentine's Day Massacre
of 1929. When he finally served his first prison time in May of
1929, it was simply for carrying a gun. By 1930, he was Chicago's
"Public Enemy Number One." To his great chagrin, it was
the Internal Revenue Service, and not the FBI, that was responsible
for his eventual incarceration at Alcatraz.
In 1931, Capone was indicted for income tax evasion for the years
1925-29. He was also charged with the misdemeanor of failing to
file tax returns for the years 1928 and 1929. The government charged
that Capone owed $215,080.48 in taxes from his gambling profits.
The jury found Capone not guilty on eighteen of the twenty-three
counts and he was sentenced to a total of ten years in federal prison
and one year in the county jail.
In May 1932, Capone was sent to Atlanta to begin his eleven-year
sentence. Capone created a network of protection and privilege even
in prison – he furnished his cell with a mirror, typewriter,
rugs, and a set of the Encyclopedia Britannica. Family members kept
in constant contact with him and even took up residence at a nearby
hotel. His connection to the outside world was so effective that
he was able to continue to run his crime organization from his prison
cell. His timing was bad, though, because it was right about that
time that wardens everywhere were being asked to recommend their
most troublesome inmates for transfer to Alcatraz. Capone was one
of the first to go.
The Rock proved an impenetrable place for Capone. No deals, no
networks, no special treatment was possible. He lost touch with
the outside world, as well. Not a stupid man, Capone decided to
earn time off for good behavior and became the ideal prisoner. He
even refused to participate in prisoner rebellions or strikes.
While at Alcatraz, he exhibited signs of syphilitic dementia. Capone
spent the rest of his felony sentence in the hospital. On January
6, 1939, his prison term expired and he was transferred to Terminal
Island, a Federal Correctional Institution in California, to serve
his one-year misdemeanor sentence. He was finally released on November
16, 1939.
After his release, Capone spent a short time in the hospital. His
mind and body continued to deteriorate. On January 21, 1947, he
had an apoplectic stoke and died from cardiac arrest.
