NATIONAL PARK
After its colorful history as a military fortress, a prison, and
a site for the longest land occupation ever recorded in U.S. history,
Alcatraz needed a rest. In 1972, Congress created the Golden Gate
National Recreation Area and included Alcatraz Island as part of
the new National Park Service unit. It opened to the public in Autumn
1973 and hosts more than one million visitors annually.
The total area of Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA)
is 75,398 acres of land and water. Approximately 28 miles of coastline
lie within its boundaries. It is nearly two and one-half times the
size of San Francisco. GGNRA comprises numerous sites, including
Alcatraz, Marin Headlands, Fort Funston, Fort Mason, as well as
Muir Woods National Monument, Fort Point National Historic Site,
and the Presidio of San Francisco. Each has its own unique natural,
cultural, and military history.
Alcatraz Island is one of Golden Gate National Recreation Area's
most popular destinations, offering a close-up look at a historic
and infamous federal prison long off-limits to the public. Visitors
to the island can explore the remnants of the prison, and also learn
about the Indian occupation of 1969 - 1971, early military fortifications
(the first U.S. fort on the coast), and the West Coast's first (and
oldest operating) lighthouse. These structures and the island's
many natural features - gardens, tide pools, bird colonies, and
bay views beyond compare - are being preserved by the National Park
Service which is working to make it accessible to visitors, preserve
its buildings, protect its birds and other wildlife, and interpret
its history.
