Day Trip - Wine Country

Wine Country
"Wine Country" consists of several counties just north of San Francisco, but the main destinations tend to be Napa and Sonoma. Napa Valley is comprised of six towns: Calistoga, St. Helena, Rutherford, Oakville, Yountville and Napa, each with its own distinct personality and charm. Sonoma County is much larger and contains 38 different towns, from rural to suburban, but the great California wines are found throughout.

Hotels and resorts are often of the luxury variety and trendy restaurants open with nearly as much frequency as they do in San Francisco. Many of the wineries are still family-run. A few do not distribute their wine to stores or restaurants, so buying directly from their winery when you visit is a unique opportunity to buy what the general public is denied.

But it's not just the wine that draws visitors to this region. Picture dining in top quality restaurants while you enjoy scenic views of rolling hills and endless vineyards. Imagine dining al fresco where the sun is warm most of the year. The architecture of wine country harkens back to the days when the vineyards were first established - many Victorian homes still stand tall (particularly in the city of Napa), lending the place a quaintly historic quality. The wine elevates just elevates this glorious setting to a sampling of paradise!

Wine country is also home to natural spas, relaxing mineral pools, therapeutic mudbaths, and all-round luxurious pampering. Calistoga is known for its mineral waters and mudbaths, while St. Helena is home to a number of fine spas. Treat yourself to these natural wonders - they enhance the flavor of both red and white wines! If you've a penchant for world-class restaurants, spas, and resorts, Napa Valley is sure to please.

Sonoma's town square attracts both tourists and locals. With a lovely park as its centerpiece, historic buildings border the square: the Sebastiani Theater, Mission San Francisco Solano de Sonoma (where Mexican soldiers were once housed) are just a few. Be sure to visit the Sonoma Cheese Factory, too. Several excellent restaurants line the perimeter of the square, as well - the county is as renowned for its fresh, delicious food as it is for its wine. Spend some time in Santa Rosa for charming bed and breakfasts, fine dining, and of course, delicious wines.

In Sonoma County, visit the town of Glen Ellen, home to Jack London State Park. Glen Ellen offers excellent shopping and restaurants and the park is a lovely site for a picnic. In the summer, the town of Guerneville, on the Russian River, turns into a popular getaway for city folk - the Jazz Festival happens at the end of June and draws bigger crowds every year. If your tastes run to quieter pastimes, be sure to visit Jenner, the place for unforgettable vistas, horseback riding, snorkeling, and watching whales migrate south in January.

Tours of Wine Country are available through a number of tour companies.

Getting to this region is a beautiful exercise in and of itself, whether you opt to drive directly to it or take the Blue and Gold Fleet ferry from San Francisco to Vallejo. Wine Country is less than a two-hour drive from San Francisco. Dinner and lodging reservations are absolutely necessary to ensure that you get what you want when you want it, so be sure to plan and reserve in advance of your arrival.

As our guest, you will leave your car and cares at the bottom of the knoll and travel to the top by arial Sky Tram where you begin a self-paced tour of the winery. You can bring a picnic and enjoy our wines on the beautiful terrace. Following the tour, the Visitor's Center, offers Sterling wines in the elegant Main Tasting Room. Our knowledgeable and friendly staff will introduce a selection of current releases in a relaxing setting. Built in the architectural style of the Greek island of Mykonos, the Sterling Vineyards winery sits dramatically on top of a 300-foot knoll just south of Napa Valley's northernmost town, Calistoga. Its white, monastic buildings contrast sharply with the dark green of the trees that cover the knoll. Visitors are carried up to the winery by aerial tramway and treated to a spectacular view of the valley below, as well as a close-up look at the Napa Valley's most dramatic and recognizable winery. The panorama is awe-inspiring and peaceful, punctuated only by the peal of Sterling's antique English bells
