Fortunately
for visitors, there is no "best" part of the city. Depending on
what's important to you, choose accommodations suited to your interests,
needs, or preferences.
Luxury Hotel
If you seek the comforts of home plus a few extra ones, San Francisco
has no shortage of luxury hotels. Most of them are in the Financial
District and Union Square;
a few have begun to appear in the SOMA
district, too. These are top of the line establishments,
with prices that reflect a high level of service and comfort. Luxury
hotels are ideal for honeymoons, anniversaries, business travel,
or any time you crave pampering.
Near Theaters and Shopping
Most visitors want to be in the thick of the action - and in San
Francisco, that tends to be Union Square. Shopping, theater, cable
cars, and a good dining assortment make Union Square a perennial
favorite. Typically, you'll stay in restored buildings ranging from
fairly reasonably priced to very expensive. Sometimes, you can get
lucky and find something affordable. Staying in Union
Square gives you access to most of the things you'll
want to do on your vacation. A second area is the Civic
Center near City Hall, The Opera, Symphony Hall and other
public buildings. Parking is a ridiculous undertaking; if you have
a car, you'll probably end up keeping it housed in an public or
hotel garage.
Trade prime location for better rates
Those with families and/or limited budgets may prefer to stay in
two area. The Marina motels line Lombard Street, west of Van Ness.
The street itself is busy and noisy but the residential areas to
the north and south are lovely. Though you won't be within comfortable
walking distance of Union Square, you will have good access to the
shopping on Union and Chestnut Streets (Cow Hollow and the Marina,
respectively). You'll also be fairly close to the Palace of Fine
Arts and the Marina Green. Parking is only slightly better than
it might be downtown. The other main area of inexpensive hotels
is near SFO - San Francisco International
Airport. 10-15 miles south of San Francisco on Hwy.101.

Fisherman's Wharf
If downtown holds little appeal for you, the more relaxed atmosphere
of Fisherman's Wharf may
be what you seek. Fisherman's Wharf may be more relaxed, but that
doesn't mean it's less crowded! Lots of shopping, souvenir opportunities,
street entertainment, and restaurants characterize this part of
town. Prices are comparable to those in Union Square, though special
deals may be more common if you're willing to search for them. Going
carless is your wisest choice - parking is expensive and exceptionally
difficult. Tourism is the prime focus here.
Nightclubs, Cyber-life, and Trendy Restaurants
As the Internet industry grows and consumes more office space in
the area South of Market (SOMA),
more hotels in this neighborhood to accommodate business travelers.
SOMA is also home to the Moscone Convention Center, the Yerba Buena
Center, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Sony Metreon.
Some of these hotels are not too far from Union
Square. If nightclubs and trendy restaurants figure prominently
in your travel plans, SOMA
is a great choice for you.
Bed and Breakfast and Boutique Hotels
Bed and breakfasts are scattered all over the city, sometimes in
areas with a strong residential feel. If you know the city fairly
well, or want to feel more like a local and less like a tourist,
try a bed and breakfast. They vary considerably in price and service,
so it would be wise to ask lots of questions. Parking availability
and convenience will depend on the location of the establishment.
Boutique hotels with a wide variety of decor and rates are plentiful
in San Francisco. A memorable way to visit while enjoing the personal
touch from these smaller and eclectic properties.
For the
Very Budget-Minded
Hostels offer the least expensive overnight option for San Francisco
travelers -- $10 - $25 is not unusual per night. Be prepared to
share your room with someone else (probably a stranger) and certainly
expect to share a bathroom. Hostels are definitely a "no frills"
option. Parking provided by the hostel is unlikely.
