Boudin Bakery's history dates back to 1849 and is as
rich in texture as its famous product: the premiere
San Francisco sourdough French bread. San Francisco sourdough
was the culinary by-product of the California gold rush. Historians
contend that gold prospectors brought sourdough starter from Mexico
while other sourdough came north with French refugees of the
Mexican Pastry War of 1838. When Isidore Boudin established the
French Bread Bakery, it became so popular that city dwellers
and pan handlers alike would line up each morning for a
fresh-baked loaf of sourdough bread.
The Boudin tradition flourishes today with the
same distinctive Boudin sourdough French bread that took
San Francisco by storm back in 1849.
Sourdough French bread from Boudin is made solely from
flour, salt,water and the original mother dough that dates
back to Boudin's first loaf. The traditional baking methods
have been protected to retain the same texture and
quality that made the original sourdough such a
